Preconceived ideas are disappointing

In regard to the article by Christie Campbell Nov. 4, I applaud that she checked PILAG's Website and described it as a national organization that promotes the well-being of gays and lesbians by helping them "cope with an adverse society."

As a parent of two gay children and because I am part of the local chapter of PI'LAG that is forming in our area, I welcome the publicity we are getting while disappointed about the adverse and preconceived ideas about the nature of our organization. This is evidenced by the reception Pat Arena received in his attempt to draw attention to the pain of young people who are gay in singing his beautiful song, "Little Gay Baby".

Although PFLAG is non-denominational, I am a devoted Presbyterian who shares the good news in Scripture, which welcomes the inclusion of all persons regardless of gender.

PFLAG in its mission statement "promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans-gendered persons, their families, and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure equal rights. PFLAG provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is health and respectful of human diversity." Therefore, as a support group we contribute to wholesome community values by helping families understand and love one another.
